Sara Winchester was a disturbed woman. After her husband ( William Wirt Winchester, heir to the the Winchester Repeating Arms Company) died she was advised by a spiritualist to move west and to build a house, and to keep building it day and night so that the ghosts of all those who were killed by Winchester rifles would stop haunting her. The result is the Winchester Mansion (or Mystery House) in San Jose, CA. The house was continually under construction for 38 years–24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Two things really struck me about her story. One, I wonder if the stairs to nowhere and doors opening to nothingness really did confuse the ghosts. And two, that the spiritualist must’ve had a brother in the construction business in California.
The picture above is an imagining of her daily meeting with the contractor.
